If you have four or more people in your party, or belong to an art group that wishes to come and paint together, you can choose your own dates for what in effect is a private tour. Otherwise join other artists in booking any of the following weeks that are so far scheduled for 2010 and 2011.
Fly direct from overseas into Queenstown, New Zealand, arrive on a Saturday we meet you, paint for a week with John Crump based in Glenorchy and then you are returned to Queenstown the following Saturday.
Make your own flight arrangements to New Zealand so as to take advantage of any special deals.
You are welcome to bring your own equipment and paints etc. However, for ease of your travel to New Zealand, just leave your painting equipment at home and use ours. Just come with your painting clothes and go home with your paintings.
Top Australian artists say that John is New Zealand’s leading impressionist landscape painter. John has enjoyed 40 years experience as a professional artist, plus has a “holds nothing back” attitude as he shares his wealth of both experience and knowledge, as an artist and his local knowledge of the Glenorchy and surrounding area.
Situated at the top of Lake Wakatipu, only 45 minutes drive from Queenstown, you find Glenorchy. There are four roads from here that take you into what is recognized as being the best NZ scenery for artists and photographers. 4 wheel drive vehicles will be used so that we can take you into un-spoilt areas where you will see and paint magnificent and amazing scenes, many of which were in the “Lord of the Rings” movie.
All demonstrations are for sale, plus you will be able to view John’s gallery where any paintings purchased, can be rolled for ease of carrying or we can freight framed paintings to your home or office.

Yes, but not consecutive weeks. Paint one week with John, then we drive you back to Queenstown the following Saturday. Hire cars are readily available so do your own thing for the second week. Maybe traveling to Milford Sound, Arrowtown, Te Anau, Doubtful Sound or elsewhere and be back in Queenstown the following Saturday for pick up to start your second week of painting. less
There is lots to do while based in Glenorchy, such as golf, trout fishing, hunting, hiking, photography, jet boating, skiing, reading, relaxing, day trip to Queenstown or Arrowtown. We can also arrange local guides for you at an extra cost, of you wish. less
Sorry, not at present, although we may in future years. Make your own bookings so you can take advantage of any special fares available, plus arrive and depart when you like so as to take advantage of NZ’s other scenic attractions.
USA, European and most other countries fly into Auckland International airport then it’s a domestic flight to Queenstown. From Australia you can fly direct in and out of Queenstown. less
We are happy to make suggestions, but if you Google New Zealand scenic attractions, or the things or places you wish to visit, you’ll have opportunity to make your own bookings for what ever you may wish to do. less
Yes, this is no problem. While painting, we suggest you add 50% Alkyd white (supplied by us) to your Titanium white. This coupled with Liquin medium, will see paintings touch dry the next day. Regardless, we provide special imported non stick paper that you place between your paintings and this ensures your paintings arrive home in the same condition as when you leave. less
No problem. We paint in John’s studio/garage complex. less
That’s ok as you are welcome to bring your own watercolours, acrylics or pastels however you will need to bring all you need for the medium you use. Note that John’s teaching in oils can be applied to any medium as the concepts, principles and scenery are all the same. We shall also allow you a credit for the oil painting items you don’t use and we shall refund this, or you can put it towards the price of one of John’s paintings if you prefer. less
Just bring your old painting clothes and rugged footwear for the outdoors. You are better with several layers of clothing so that you can take these off and put them on, according to the weather temperature. If you are coming into NZ the winter months of June, July, August, and September you will need different clothing to keep you warm. It’s hard to paint if you’re cold! SoÉ you need to allow for Glenorchy’s mountain surroundings. Summers are generally warm, Autumn nights tend to be coolish, while winter (the best time of the year for outdoor painting), demands warm clothing with a shirt and sweatshirt or jersey and then an insulated ski type top and pants. &dlquo;Long John’s&drquo; may also be an advantage. Boots need to be good, waterproof and with insulated linings and thick socks. less
There is no need to bring anything at all for oil painting unless you prefer to use you’re your own brushes and other implements. We shall provide everything that an oil painter might need. If you wish to paint in any other medium then you will need to bring your own stock. The painting gear provided is complete and the best available anywhere. less
While you are painting we provide all transport each day, plus pick up at the airport and return. You only need a hire car if you or your partner wishes to have some independence during your time in Glenorchy. There are plenty of hire cars available for those who want to tour either before or after painting. Please note that in NZ the vehicles drive on the left hand side of the road. less
You are welcome to stay on and paint the following week. We are happy to hire and provide all the painting equipment necessary. However we do not provide transport. There is magnificent scenery in every direction and plenty to paint within 500 yard radius of your accommodation.
If you want more than one weeks painting we suggest you book in the first week, do your own scenic touring for the second week and then another weeks painting during the third week. less
Although it is possible to do basic food and very limited souvenir shopping in Glenorchy, we would suggest shopping in Queenstown which is 45 minutes by car. We could arrange for you to have a day in Queenstown as an optional extra and the price may vary depending upon the transport we need to use on the day you wish to go. less
Yes, you can bring your own paints and equipment. Please do not pack any paints in your hand luggage. These must be included in your checked in luggage and we suggest you pack them in a cardboard carton marking the outside &dlquo;artists colors - made with vegetable extracts and artificial colouring&drquo;. From your paint supplier you should get an MSD sheet (material safety data) and include this in the carton. Do not bring any paint thinners or medium, we shall supply this here. less
Yes, if you like any of the equipment we are happy to sell any or all the individual items to you. You can buy anything new or second hand. We can give you the price list while you are painting with us. Depending on our supply, easels may need to be ordered for later delivery. less
Glenorchy has good cafes and hotels, so meals can be purchased. If you are staying in a motel with our "silver tour&drquo; there are full cooking facilities in your unit. Others will need to purchase meals and we can arrange for picnic lunches to be ordered the day before. There are supermarkets in Queenstown for those who wish to buy supplies and prepare their own meals. Glenorchy has only one small store which carries very basic food requirements. less
